Automotive supplier Unichem, alongside partner R&Y, has acquired Loomia, a specialist in electronic textiles and flexible circuitry. The acquisition is aimed squarely at accelerating Unichem’s entry into the humanoid robot skin market, a crucial frontier for safe, physical interaction between humans and machines.

For consumer-facing humanoids like the upcoming NEO from 1X, soft exteriors and tactile feedback are not cosmetic luxuries—they are fundamental safety requirements. Traditional industrial robots operate with rigid metal frames and rely on vision or force-torque sensors at their joints to detect collisions. In a home setting, however, a robot must be able to feel pressure across its entire chassis to avoid pinching fingers, crushing delicate items, or knocking over household furniture.

Loomia’s technology excels at embedding heating, lighting, and custom cabling directly into flexible fabrics and soft surfaces. By integrating these compliant, sensor-laden textiles into humanoid outer shells, developers can give robots a sense of touch analogous to human skin. This allows a machine to distinguish between a firm grip on a handrail and a gentle touch on a human arm, translating raw physical contact into actionable data for the robot's control system.

This acquisition also highlights how automotive supply chains are pivoting to feed the emerging humanoid industry. Technologies originally designed for smart car interiors—such as heated seats, touch-sensitive dashboards, and occupant detection sensors—are highly transferable to bipedal robots. As automotive suppliers look to diversify, the humanoid market represents a high-growth sector hungry for lightweight, durable, and mass-manufacturable soft components.

While the industry has made rapid progress in artificial intelligence and locomotion, physical interaction remains a bottleneck.
